STUDENTS WON CASH PRIZE IN A PROJECT COMPETITION:
Ms.
L. Netrah, Ms. C.
Neha, and Mr. Rahul,
students of the final year B.Tech Biotechnology won Rs 1,
20,000 in the project competition
organized by
the JFWTC GE
Edison, India and sponsored by the
Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi
GE
Edison ChallengeCompetition
is a research
project competition organized by the JFWTC GE
Edison,
India and the Indian government’s Department of Science and
Technology, through DSIR
TEPP program. The
competition announced an award of Rs 20,000 for each team that shows
the “proof of concept” for projects that they
design. Moreover,
the winner team gets prize money of Rs five lakhs and the runner gets
one lakh.
Ms. L. Netrah and her team
members Mr. Rahul and Ms.
C. Neha, students of the final year BTech Biotechnology from the
Department of Biotechnology, Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering,
Sriperumbudur, are involved in a project to produce electricity using
local resources in a village near Chennai. This team named as
“Energy
Booster” proposed to produce power supply round-the-clock for
the
villages instead of just two hours of supply per day. This team chose
Kaliyapettai village near Chennai, which has a textile mill nearby
discharging industrial effluents. In a preliminary study, the team
used the effluents from the textile mill to grow algae
(Cholorococcus)
which can convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into different types of
oils which are then converted into biodiesel to generate electricity
using a diesel generator. The team grew algae in a tank and extracted
the oil. The team currently has been involved in analyzing the oil
for its power potential. Neha says that the oil produced in 5 days
can power the lightings for the village’s 600 families
throughout
the day and the initial cost to set-up a plant is as little as Rs. 1
lakh.
Judges
reviewed their project
presentation on the
economics, the scientific principles and technology, and the novelty
of the ideas. The
judges announced the
winners on the November 6, 2009, at Bangalore. Of the two hundred
teams from all over India, eighteen teams were selected in the
preliminary rounds and were awarded Rs. 20,000 for the “proof
of
concept” of their projects. The Energy Booster is one of the
eighteen teams that received Rs. 20,000. These eighteen teams were in
the finals and this Energy
Booster team
came-up as the runner-up with Rs. 1 lakh prize money and a trophy in
this
GE Edison Challenge
Competition.
The Department
of Biotechnology and the
SVCE Management congratulate Ms.L.Netrah,
