  1. Mr.S.Arun Senthil, IV year student mentored by Mr.N.Arun Prem Anand, Asst.Professor, has been selected under AICTE-INAE Travel Grant Scheme to present a technical paper on Comparitive Performance Analysis of Industrial Scale Catalytic Steam Reformer with Membrane Steam Reformer in 28th European Symposium on Computer Aided Process Engineering, Graz, Austria.

2017

  1. Association of Chemical Technologist, IIChE- SVCE Students chapter has been bestowed with "PIDILITE'S BEST STUDENTS CHAPTER AWARD"- FIRST PLACE for splendid performance of our Student Chapter for 10th time among 148 students chapter in India and received the award during CHEMCON - 2017 held at Haldia Institute of Technology, Haldia.
  2. A project titled Early decomposition of faecal matter proposed by Dr.C.Anand Babu, Dr.D.Nilavunesan, Dr.E.Nakkeeran, Dr.N.Meyyappan has been selected for SWACCH-A-THON 1.0 semi final presentation on 7th and 8th September at Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, New Delhi.
  3. Prof. C. Anand Babu received a grant of INR 20.2 Lakh from BRNS, Department of Atomic Energy, Bombay for the project titled “Recovery of acid and useful metals from Pickling Effluents generated at Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC)”
  4. Prof C Anand Babu received Rs. 500,000 under MSME Funded Project entitled "Equipment for HIGH PURE WATER" under Technology Incubation Center of SVCE

Ms.Sitara Vedaraman and Sruthi S III year Chemical Engineering presented a paper titled “Process optimization for biodiesel production from waster cooking sunflower oil using response surface methodology” at SCHEMCON 2011 held at Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkatta during 23rd – 24th Sep 2011 and win VICAL Award Certificate and Cash prize of Rs.1,000/- for each students from Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers presented during the inaugural day of CHEMCON 2011 at M.S.Ramahiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore on 27 – 29 December 2011.

  1. Production and Testing of Methyl Esters from Low cost feed stock, Surendar.C, Prashant R.A, Bachu Raghu Kishore, Final year students of chemical engineering, International symposium on Effect of Emission and Effulents on environment - EEEE 2011, during 23rd and 24th December 2011, at AU college of engineering, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam.

  • The Department was accredited for 3 years with effect from 27th July 2006 by the National Board of Accrediation.
  • Pass Percentage of 92-95% is maintained in the last five years.
  • So far 4 students have secured University First Ranks (GOLD MEDAL), 1 student second rank and 46 students from 3rd to 20th Ranks in the last 9 years.
  • The IIChE student Chapter of the Department was awarded the following National Level Prizes:

    1. "PIDILITE BEST STUDENT CHAPTER AWARD-2006" among the 55 chapters in India. The award carried a certificate, a trophy and a cash prize of Rs.15, 000/- .

    2." AMBUJA S BEST STUDENT CHAPTER AWARD-SECOND PRIZE-2005" among the 55 chapters in India. The award carried a certificate, a trophy and a cash prize of Rs.10, 000/-.

  • The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers - SVCE student Chapter (IIChE) and the Association of Chemical Technologists (ACT) are very active and organizes symposia, seminars, guest lectures, industrial visits, tours etc., regularly.
  • Proposal for starting an M.Tech. in Environmental Science and Technology has been submitted to the AICTE.
  • The Department has been granted 3 MODROBS project by AICTE so far.

    1. MODROBS project on "Modernisation and Development of Chemical Reaction Engineering Laboratory" for 7.5 lakhs (2007-2009).

    2. MODROBS project on "Establishment of Process control Laboratory" for Rs.11.7 lakhs. The project was completed in November 2004.

    3. MODROBS project on "Establishment of Computer Aided Process & Equipment Design Laboratory" for 5.5 Lakhs. The project was completed in January 2002.

  • MoUs with CLRI (Chennai), SPIC (Tuticorin), MPL (Chennai), TAC (Chennai) and TPL (Chennai) are signed for academic and collaborative work.
  • One or two Workshops / Short Term Training Programmes are conducted every year.
  • One Technical Student Symposium (PANSOPHY) is organized every year.
  • Student Staff Ratio of 13:1 is achieved.
  • A large collection of Books and International / National Journals are available. The numbers are much more than the stipulated requirements.
  • A good number of industrially relevant Student Projects are undertaken. Most of the projects are done in the industry itself. A large number of students undergo Industrial Training during summer and winter vacations.
  • The college awards Cash Prize to the Best Student Project of the Department.
  • A good number of Papers are published in Journals and presented in Seminars / Workshops / Conferences (both National and International) by faculty and Students.
  • The Campus Placement achieved by the Department is above 90% among those who opted for placement in the past 5 years.
  • Faculty are sponsored for doing Ph.D., and P.D.F.,

2009-2010

    Fellowship for Chemical Engineering Student
  • III Year Chemical Engineering Student, Ms Meera Hariharan, has been selected by Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore-Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi-The National Academy of Sciences, India, Allahabad (called IASc-INSA-NASI Summer Research Fellowship) 2009 Scheme.
  • The fellowships are open to students all over India and is awarded on the basis of merit. Under this Fellowship she will be working at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore during summer under Prof. S Natarajan of Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit there. She will be paid a fellowship of Rs.5000/- per month, to and fro fare and accommodation at Bangalore. The duration of the fellowship is 2 months starting from May 2009.


  • Congratulations to the Winners The following students are awarded prizes in the Quiz programme organized by Energy and Fuel Users Association of India on behalf of CPCL, at SVCE, coordinated by the Department of Chemical Engineering, during the Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight-2009 (OGCF) held on 20.01.2009.

2008-2009

  • A one day National Seminar on "MODERN TRENDS IN PROCESS INDUSTRIES" was organized by the IIChE - SVCE student Chapter and ACT in honour of the chapter receiving the IIChE - PIDILITE BEST STUDENT CHAPTER Award - 2006.
  • So far 27 students of Final year Chemical Engineering were placed in various companies through campus placement.
  • 12 students have opted for higher studies.
  • One faculty, Mr.R.Senthil Kumar, has submitted his Ph.D., Thesis to Anna University.
  • One faculty, Mr.R.Parthiban, has submitted his Ph.D., Synopsis to Anna University.
  • One faculty Mr.B.Nedumaran, is continuing the research work on "Removal of Heavy Metals from aqueous solution by waste Biomass".
  • Dr.P.V.R.Iyer, inaugurated the Student Chapter of IIChE at SSN College of Engineering, Kalavakkam and gave a Technical Lecture on that occasion.

2007-2008

  • The Head of the Department, Dr.P.V.R.Iyer, has been elected as the Registrar & Convener, Admission Committee of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, for the year 2007, consecutively for the third year in a row.
  • Mr.B.Nedumaran, Assistant Professor was appointed as the ember of the Scientific Committee of the 2nd International Conference on Experiments / Process / System Modelling / Simulation and Optimisation (IC - EpsMso), held at Athens, Greece.
  • 2 Special Lectures were delivered by the faculty, one at SRM University and the other at NIMS, Japan.
  • Dr.K.Ravichandran, Senior Lecturer, is involved in the SPEL - SVCE collaborative Research Project, on developing Etching Formulations to enhance bonding and controlling of surface colouration of Copper PCB.
  • Mr.V.Shriram secured the university FIRST RANK (Gold Medal) and 4 students from 3rd to 20th Ranks.
  • The IIChE student Chapter of the Department was awarded the "PIDILITE BEST STUDENT CHAPTER AWARD-2006 among the 55 chapters in India. The award carries a certificate, a trophy and a cash prize of Rs.15, 000/- .
  • 7 Guest Lectures were arranged by the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers - SVCE Student Chapter and the Association of Chemical Technologists. 6 Industrial visits were arranged to various companies for the Third and Final Year Chemical Engineering Students.
  • The Department has been granted MODROBS project by AICTE for 7.5 lakhs for "Modernisation and Development of Chemical Reaction Engineering Laboratory" (2007-2009).
  • Two lecturers underwent an Internship training at the Technip India limited, Chennai in their process centre at Nandhanam Extension.
  • The Technical Student Symposium, PANSOPHY was conducted on 24th August 2006, in which various Engineering colleges participated. 16 Papers were presented and a Technical quiz was conducted for which 20 teams registered.
  • 17 Industrial Projects were undertaken by the students at various Industries out of the 21 projects done.
  • The project titled, "Reduction of Chemical Consumption in the Caustic Chlorine Plant" by Harsha.V.Koushik, S.Deepak and J.Raghuram Sastry was awarded the BEST PROJECT of the Department in 2006.
  • 8 papers were published by the faculty in various National and International Journals. 11 papers by the faculty were accepted for presentation in various National and International Conferences (10 in India and 1 in Newzealand) of which 8 were presented.
  • Student Presentations:

    1. One student presented a paper on "Waste to Electricity by Anaerobic Digestion" in the 4th ISME WSE4S International Conference on Heat Transfer, Thermal Engineering and Environment in Crete Island,

    Greece.

    2. Four students presented two Technical papers in SCHEMCON -2006 at JNTU, Ananthpur of which one bagged the FIRST PRIZE and the other, a consolation prize.

    3. Four students presented two Technical Papers at CECRI, Karaikudi and both got SECOND PRIZE in different sessions.

  • 12 workshops were attended by the Department faculty conducted by various Academic and Industrial Organizations in India.
  • 27 students of Final year Chemical Engineering were placed in various companies through campus placement.
  • 14 students went for higher studies in India and Abroad.
  • Research work on "Studies on Tapered Fluidized Anaerobic Mesopores Activated Carbon Bed Bioreactor for the Treatment of Distillery Effluent" , "Removal of Heavy Metals from aqueous solution by waste Biomass" and "Uptake of Heavy metals from aqueous waste using Macro Algae and Crab Shell Particles" are being continued as Ph.D. work by three faculty members.

2005-2006

  • The Head of the Department, Dr.P.V.R.Iyer was elected as the Registrar of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is also the council member of the Institute for the years 2005, 2006 and 2007.
  • Mr.B.Nedumaran, Assistant Professor of the department has been qualified in the National level Certification Examination for Energy Auditor conducted by the National Productivity Centre, Chennai on behalf of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India.
  • 9 of the first 20 University Ranks were secured by the Final Year Chemical Engineering Students. M.Girish, Secured the All India 15th Rank and S.P.Lakshmanan secured the All India 20th Rank in GATE - 2005. Also, 9 more students qualified in GATE - 2005.
  • The IIChE student Chapter of the department was awarded the AMBUJA'S BEST STUDENT CHAPTER AWARD-SECOND PRIZE-2005 among the 55 chapters in India. The award carries a certificate, a trophy and a cash prize of Rs.10, 000/-.
  • 7 Guest Lectures were arranged by the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers - SVCE Student Chapter and the Association of Chemical Technologists. 5 Industrial visits were arranged to various companies for the Third and Final Year Chemical Engineering Students.
  • The Department was awarded an Industrial Consultancy Project "Assistance in development of Intelligent Business Activity Monitoring of a cement plant" by M/s Tata Chemicals Ltd, Mumbai and Advice Sync Consulting Ltd, Chennai. The Project Value is Rs.1,25,000/=.
  • The department organized a Two Day Workshop on the Applications of ASPEN PLUS in Process Simulation.
  • The Technical Student Symposium, PANSOPHY was conducted on 23rd August 2005, in which various Engineering colleges participated. 15 Papers were presented, Chemzap was conducted with 8 teams registered and a Technical quiz was conducted for which 21 teams registered.
  • 16 Industrial Projects were undertaken by the students at various Industries out of the 18 projects done.
  • The project titled, "A study on the performance Evaluation of Mechanical Dehumidifier in Drying Various Materials" by M.Girish, B.Varunkumar and S.Lokesh was awarded the BEST PROJECT of the Department in 2005.
  • 10 papers were published by the faculty in various National and International Journals.
  • 17 students presented 15 Technical papers in various National and International conferences, out of which 1 First prize and 2 Second Prizes were won.
  • 8 workshops were attended by the Department faculty conducted by various Academic and Industrial Organizations in India.
  • 28 students of the Final Year Chemical Engineering were placed in various companies through campus placements. 15 students went for higher studies in both India and abroad.
  • Research work on "Studies on Tapered Fluidized - Mesoporous Activated Carbon Bed - Anaerobic Bio Reactor for the Treatment of Wastewater", "Removal of Heavy Metals from aqueous solution by waste Biomass" and "Uptake of Heavy metals from aqueous waste using Macro Algae and Crab Shell Particles" are being continued as Ph.D. work by three faculty members.

2004-2005

  • ISTE -Short Term Training Programme on Industrial Safety and Risk Management. (Fully sponsored by ISTE) during 6 -10 September 2004

  • One Technical Student Symposium (PANSOPHY) is organised every year.
  • Four faculty members have been sponsored for doing Ph.D.
  • 13 Faculty members were recruited in the last 4 years as against the 6 who left the college.
  • Student Staff ratio of 15 : 1 is achieved.
  • A large collection of Books and International / National Journals are available. The numbers are more than the stipulated requirements.
  • A good number of industrially relevant Student Projects are undertaken. A large number of students undergo Industrial Training during summer and winter vacations.
  • R & D work on Effluent treatment and Trans-esterification of vegetable oils for use as Bio-diesel is under progress.
  • A good number of Papers are published in journals and presented in Seminars/ Workshops/ Conferences by faculty and students.
  • 2 Students secured First prize in the Paper Presentation at the 4th State Level Convention of ISTE Students Section (Tamilnadu & Pondicherry) held in September 2004 at Hosur.
  • During 2004-05, 11 papers were presented in the various students seminars held all over India. Of them 6 First and 1 Second Prizes were won.
  • Two students presented their papers in Florida, USA.
  • The College awards Cash Prize to the Best Student Project of the Department.
  • 2 Students of the department secured II Prize in the Science Seminar Competition of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of CSIR organized by Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai in 2003.
  • One student was awarded the Academy Summer Fellowship by Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore with a fellowship of Rs.4000 per month. Under this he worked for 2 months (May - July 2004) in the Catalysis Division, NCL, Pune under Dr.S.Sivashankar, Scientist on "Upgradation of Petroleum Oils"
  • The student chapter of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) and Association of Chemical Technologists (ACT) are very active and organizes guest lectures, industrial visits tours etc. regularly.

Prestigious All India Award for the Chemical Engineering Department:

Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) - Students Chapter of SVCE has been awarded THE AMBUJAS BEST STUDENT CHAPTER AWARD - FIRST PRIZE for the year 2009. The award consists of a Certificate, Trophy and a Cash award of Rs.15,000/-. The prizes are given to two of the most active student chapters during 2008-09 among 55 student Chapters all over India under IIChE. This is the fourth time, that our College is receiving such awards. The awards received earlier are as follows:
