About WRC

Innovative developments in welding techniques and processes are required to achieve both greater productivity and enhanced quality of components manufactured by the welding industry. In India, through sustained efforts by researchers, academicians and technologists, significant progress has been made in understanding processes, weldability testing and welding repair of various engineering components,. Major thrust is being given in research and development in the priority areas such as flux assisted GTAW, GMAW, laser welding, friction stir welding, hybrid welding processes, intelligent welding and automation, development of NDE sensors, development of weld process models, development of techniques for measurement and analysis of residual stresses and control of distortion etc. The mantra for success in developments is through interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists and technologists working in the industry, academia, research centres and national laboratories. Considering the above into account, with the dynamic support of our principal, to initiate the innovative research in the welding and to enhance the research and development activities of the inter disciplinary departments like Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Automobile Engineering in the field of welding, “THE WELDING RESEARCHCELL” has been set up in the department of Marine Engineering.

Main Objectives:

  • To handle two/three in-house students projects in the field of welding every year.
  • To support the research activities of our faculty members.
  • To attract consultancy works from industries in the area of material joining.
  • To support the research activities of faculty members from other institution on payment basis.
  • To conduct workshops and seminars related to welding.

    Activities of the Cell

  • Under the welding research cell, recently we got the AICTE project titled as “Artificial neural network modelling of Pulsed metal gas welding of magnesium alloy plate’s worth of 18 lakhs. Principal Investigator is Dr.N.Muthukrishnan, Prof and Head, Automobile; Co-investigator is Mr.V.Gurusamy, AP, Marine Engg.
  • Pulsed MIG welding machine of worth 6.70 lakh was purchased for the welding research cell in the month of April 2013.
  • Cold Metal Transfer MIG welding Machine worth of 16.10 lakhs has been purchased for the welding research cell.
  • An automated welding table has been designed and developed.
  • Welding Research Cell(WRC), Department of Marine Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering,
  • SVCE signs MoU with M/S ADOR Welding Limited on 12/01/2015.
  • So far, four students projects in Welding related to Marine Engineering are completed.
  • Three real time students research works are under progress
