Biotechnology principles such as domestication of animals for food by ancient civilization, bread and pickle making in food processing industry, wine and beer making in alcoholic beverage industry, selective breeding of crops and crop-rotation in agriculture, and vaccine development and vaccination in health care industry, etc. were adopted by the society and were shown to produce great impact on the living conditions of people in the earlier millennium. Biotechnology had overwhelming growth in the 20th century. Fermentation principles of Biotechnology revolutionized the production of penicillin and other antibiotics, and the food processing in the early half of the 20th century. In the last two decades, genetic engineering principles and tissue culturing methods of Modern Biotechnology have evolved and have been revolutionizing all the avenues of science and technology. It is expected that this Modern Biotechnology will produce tremendous enhancement in the quality of living with a safer and more resourceful world in this millennium.
With this foresight, under the dynamic guidance of our Chairman Dr. A. C. Muthiah, our College has taken a strategic initiative by starting the Biotechnology Programme in the year of 2005 to provide skilled human resource in this new Modern Biotechnology and to enhance the research in this area.
The department conducts an undergraduate and a postgraduate programmes that are approved by AICTE -NewDelhi, and Anna University chennai, Anna university of Technology-Chennai, Chennai. The Department of Biotechnology recognized as a Research centre to conduct Full time/ Part time Ph.D program and M.S (By Research) program under Anna University of Technology, Chennai. It has full-fledged laboratories that include Biochemistry & Bio-organic Chemistry, Bio-informatics, Bio-Process, Cell Biology, Genetic Engineering, Immunology, Instrumental Methods of Analysis, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Downstream Processing. Our Biotechnology building has three floors with 73,000-sq.ft area for all those Laboratories, Classrooms, Library, Conference Room, and Offices for members of faculty.
The Laboratories are periodically upgraded as per the curriculum and as per the new developments in Biotechnology. Moreover, teacher to student ratio is maintained at far less than the AICTE norms. The teachers are qualified with PhDs and M.Tech, and with experience in teaching, research and industrial processes.

The stakeholders of the programme are Industry, Students, Alumni, Parents and Faculty. All the stakeholders have relevance in defining the Vision, Mission and PEOs. The percentage weightage based on the feedback of each stake holders considered for developing and redefining of Vision, Mission and PEOs. The redefined Vision, mission and PEOs are given below.

1. The Vision is to produce higher caliber Biotechnologists to attain new heights in bioinformatics and bioprocess technology as per industrial needs and to provide leaders in the field of Biotechnology.  

2. The Mission is to progress the department to attain center of excellence in bioinformatics and bioprocess technologies by providing best Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Doctoral programs and R&D activities within a decade.
To develop special skilled training programs for graduates to meet the personality characters stipulated by the industries within a period of five years.

3. The PEOs are

•    PEO-1: To produce Biotechnology graduates who will be employable in core Biotech/Pharma industries and domain based software services.

•    PEO-2: To produce research oriented Biotechnology graduates who will be employable in academic/Industry sponsored research and also who will be pursuing higher studies.

•    PEO-3: To produce bioentrepreneurs.

Programme Specific Objectives

1.To make the students to be an effective entrepreneur to start biotechnology industries and or companies

2.To make the students to become an excellent researcher or Scientist in biotechnology research field to discover unique products for societal need with proper ethical statute

NBA has given 12 Graduate Attributes (GAs). Based on these GAs Program Outcomes (POs) have been framed by NBA. We have to follow these 12 POs. These POs are generic to engineering education and applies to all branches of engineering.

  1. Engineering Knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering
    problems.
  2. Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  3. Design / Development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities
    relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
  9. Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
  10. Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions.
  11. Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering management principles and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.
  12. Life-long learning: Recognize the need for and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and lifelong learning in the broadest context of technological change.
