Indian Biological Engineering Competition (iBEC) is a pre-iGEM competition jointly organized by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, New Delhi and JNU, New Delhi for support to International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition presentation at Boston, October 2016. The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) foundation, a spin out of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, USA, conducts the prestigious iGEM competition annually in Synthetic Biology. The Foundation is dedicated to the advancement of synthetic biology by the development of open community, and collaboration through education and competition. Team SVCE_CHENNAI is the first team among the Anna University affiliated colleges to register in iGEM and won the Bronze medal in iGEM -2015. Students of the Department of Biotechnology has formed a team (SVCE_CHENNAI) under the guidance Prof. M. Sivanandham, Secretary, SVEHT and Dr. Nalinkanth V. Ghone, Professor/BT and registered for this year competition. They have submitted the proposal titled 'Synthesis and delivery of cationic antimicrobial peptides as a novel system for the prevention of milk spoilage' for iBEC competition. The proposal has been selected for financial support from Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, New Delhi. A total grant amount of Rs. 5 Lakhs towards research, travel and registration fees was provided.
