Research Activities

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is recognised as a Research centre by Anna University, Chennai, for carrying out research work at Masters and Doctorate level.

Currently Six faculty members of the department are carrying out their doctoral research work at the research centres housed within the department.

Many students, at UG and PG level, use these facilities to do their final year and pre-final year project work.

The department also executes research projects that are sponsored by external agencies like AICTE, DST, DRDO, Tamil Nadu state council for Science and Technology, etc.

The following facilities are available at various labs of our department for consultancy projects. A nominal price has been fixed for the utilization of these facilities for carrying out research projects.

AVL engine – full set up
Flow visualization camera – analysing spray angle, spray length, particle size etc.
Bio diesel – all equipments required to produce bio diesel by trans-esterification process
CFD – Fluent and star CD (licensed) software for flow analysis
ANSYS, ADAMS and Pro E Creo V 3.0 (licensed) – modeling and analysis software
Tribology – Reciprocating wear tribometer with data acquisition
Composites – Fibre reinforced plastics (thermoset and thermoplastics) laminates of size 30 cm x 30 cm (max.) with natural and synthetic fibres.
Nano particle suspension in polymer matrix by sonication, stirring, melt compounding and calendaring.
Wire saw cutter - cutting the laminates to various standards.
Surface roughness measurement (contact type) – turning, facing, drilled, milled surface etc.
Pulsed MIG welding
Cold metal transfer welding
Setup required for Super plastic formation of Magnesium alloys
Friction Stir Welding
Coordinate Measurement Machine [CMM]
