Dr. Santha further introduced the topic of the lecture and familiarised the students with the facilities available in the department.

Dr. Sabitha Ramakrishnan introduced the basic concepts of ‘Internet of things’ and the underlying principle behind it. She further asked about the innovations done by the students and also threw light on the common misconceptions that were prevalent among the students. A detailed description of the process of moulding a static device into an interactive device was discussed and the security hazards were also pointed out.

The lecture was very subject driven with lot of interaction from the faculties and students present. The Internet of Things (IoT) shows a new vision, i.e., hyper-connected technologies with the societies. IoT opens new opportunities for wearable devices, home appliances, and software to share and communicate information on the Internet. IoT is understood as an integration of a wide range of systems and technologies (such as computers, mobile laptops and phones, wireless/wired network communications, sensors, clouds and so on) interconnected via the Internet.

She also pointed out the criticality of the security requirements for such hyperconnected things/networks due to some classes of the IoT devices having constrained resources. The security related challenges that IoT would encounter was discussed. Further, some adaptive security solutions for IoT applications were shown. Finally, research directions that could provide solutions to the security challenges in the new domain were pointed out .

The lecture came to an end with an interactive question and answer session with the active participation of vast majority of students. All the doubts were cleared by the dignitaries. The resource person also offered further support for projects. The session was highly informative and lot of practical inputs were given along with a strong message about importance of innovative outputs.

REPORT ON ROOFTOP SOLAR PV SYSTEM - SEMINAR

Date : 10.07.2018

Time : 3.30 pm

Talk Details:

As the demand for solar electric systems grows, progressive builders are adding solar photovoltaics (PV) as an option for their customers. This overview of solar photovoltaic systems will give the builder a basic understanding of:

• Evaluating a building site for its solar potential

• Common grid-connected PV system configurations and components

• Considerations in selecting components

• Considerations in design and installation of a PV system

• Typical costs and the labor required to install a PV system

• Building and electric code requirements

• Where to find more information

Emphasis was placed on information that will be useful in including a grid-connected PV system in a bid for a residential or small commercial building.

The talk also covered those details of the technology and installation that may be helpful in selecting subcontractors to perform the work, working with a designer, and directing work as it proceeds. A summary of the system types and components was given so that the builder will know what to expect to see in a design submitted by a subcontractor or PV system designer.

The talk came to an end with an interactive Q&A session and a large majority of the audience evinced interested in the process of installation.

REPORT ON EXHIBITION ON WHEELS

In order to familiarize our students with the various technologies used in Industrial Automation, the college organized an exhibition on Low Cost Automation. For this purpose, a mobile van called ‘Festo Expotainer’ which is a custom built fully equipped exhibition vehicle built on a Volvo Chassis was brought to the SVCE campus on 23rd July 2018 and was stationed near the library. It had a wide range of static displays of latest products along with dynamic application displays,.

It was an interactive and informative exhibition where Festo engineers explained the components and their applications. More than 200 engineering students visited the exhibition in small batches of 30 students each.

In this exhibition the students were introduced to the concepts of pneumatic control. The equipment showcased included Process valves, Ultra compact maintenance unit, Valve terminals and CPX, Miniature drives, Actuator handling technology, Stepper and Servo motor applications, Systematic gripping, Tubings, Part sensing and vision apparatus, and complete range of push-in fittings.

It also showcased Mechatronic systems designed for various industrial applications such as purely pneumatic pick and place loop mechanism. Videos were also played showcasing the wide range of R&D projects undertaken by Festo in recent years.

All the students enjoyed the experience and found it informative. The engineer from Festo mentioned that he was impressed with the students’ eagerness to learn about these latest technologies. Overall it was a good learning experience for the students as well as faculty members and many students plan to use the technology for making bigger and better projects.
